The story centers around Catalina who is barely 15 when she marries a general at least 15 years her senior whom anyone with half a braincell can tell is going to turn out to be a power-obsessed narcissistic jerk. In case you have any hopes for this guy, he establishes himself pretty I gave up on this book about halfway through. In case you have any hopes for this guy, he establishes himself pretty quickly as that guy that you would never let a friend or a daughter of yours marry.

The novel is quite regionalized, its written by a Mexican woman whose mother grew up in that environment. There is no particular art to her writing style and the story is a dime a dozen, in Mexico at least. But her colloquial style made her accessible to a wide array of readers, which made her and her novel famous. Those books speak to a much more universal audience while still reflecting the particularities of being a Latin-American woman in the 20th century.

I highly recommend this international film festival to support personal cultural growth, increase in language and cultural facility, and simply as a valuable and local experience of the Other. Dominating men fight ruthlessly for control, manipulating and exploiting others to gain power. She follows him willingly, entranced by his power, wealth, sexuality and the escape he offers from her provincial life. The handsome orchestra director provides Catalina with her greatest desire, her greatest love and her greatest tragedy.
Smitten, she agrees to accompany him to Tecolutla and loses her virginity to him. At that point she becomes curious about sexual activity , including masturbation. His arrest due to accusations of murder give her a taste of the true volatility and uncertainty of being a political wife, despite his release a few days later. Shortly after she discovers that she is pregnant, yet her joy is dampened significantly when she sees him embracing another woman , her first glimpse of his many infidelities.
